North Wales’ Aber Falls Distillery, finally unveils its much-anticipated first ever single malt whisky to customers.
Sitting at the foot of the famous Aber Falls Waterfall, just off of the A55, the distillery complex located in a charming converted farm, complimenting the stunning location, patiently waits for the release of its first ever single malt Welsh whisky. Being North Wales’ first whisky distillery in over 100 years, the distillery has become hugely popular already, thanks to its well-received range of Welsh gins and liqueurs. Its latest release of the inaugural whisky being described on the website as, “a glowing amber, the tropical fruit flavours first, followed by scents of sweet hay and cut grass. The palate delivers warmth with dark chocolate and golden syrup before rounding off with a touch of cream and vanilla to finish.”
Only opening its doors in 2017, the passionate and driven team have risen from strength to strength to create a business that has Welsh representation at its forefront. A team of both English and Welsh speaking individuals that are truly passionate about keeping Welsh language and culture alive, as well as, creating jobs and working alongside the residents to aid the economy and ensure the region is celebrated. They have even gone as far as working with other Welsh distillers, including Penderyn, to secure geographical indication (GI) status for the whisky category, creating ideal conditions to influence the character of their whisky.
After the devastating effects of Covid-19 took its toll, the distillery also suffered severe flooding in 2020 that demanded reconstruction. But finally, the distillery has sprung back into action being able to offer Covid safe tours again going from 10am - 4pm. The tours will tell you everything you need to know about their range of premium products, while even allowing a tasting at the end. Their visitors centre offers a Welsh light bites menu ranging from buttermilk cod to Welsh beef burgers and can be enjoyed with drinks. Overlooking glorious views of the mountains above. Aber Falls Distillery has rightly become a pillar of the region.
In celebration of their single malt Welsh whisky, they have partnered with Great British Menu finalist and Ready Steady Cook chef, Ellis Barrie, who has created two perfect dishes to pair with the distillery’s whisky. One being a synonymous lamb dish, that suffices as a Welsh favourite, the other an earthy strawberries and cream meringue (the recipe has been shared with customers on their website).
With sustainability and original Welsh product as its drive for success, it has paid off massively. All ingredients are sourced locally from the region, including the much more difficult to source, Welsh barley. Uncompromising on quality, the distiller’s ethos of ‘field-to-fork’ also returns wasted ingredients back to local farms, who then uses it as cattle feed or fertiliser. Representing traditional values and working 7 days a week to produce new and inventive products, Aber Falls has all the attributes a whisky connoisseur can appreciate and savour.
So today we toast their success and highly recommend you go and try their Covid safe tour to see for yourself what passion for the authentic Welsh experience can look like.
